Reef-safe sunscreens use mineral actives (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) instead of chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and avobenzone — which studies link to coral bleaching. Mineral sunscreens also avoid octocrylene, parabens, and synthetic preservatives that harm marine ecosystems.

Is mineral sunscreen better for your skin?

Yes. Mineral (physical) sunscreens with zinc oxide sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them, unlike chemical sunscreens that penetrate the skin and can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and hormone disruption. Zinc oxide is particularly good for sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, and melasma.

How do you verify sunscreens are truly non-toxic?

We check every sunscreen against EWG’s Sunscreen Database, verifying they score 1-2 (low hazard) on EWG’s scoring system. We also confirm broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, verify no oxybenzone or octinoxate, and cross-reference with independent lab testing results. All listed sunscreens are reef-safe by composition.

What SPF level do I really need?

Dermatologists recommend SPF 30-50 for daily use. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks 98%.
